Qantas Apologizes for R-Rated Movie Mishap on Sydney to Tokyo Flight

A recent Qantas flight took an unexpected turn when an R-rated film was played across all in-flight screens, leaving families and passengers uncomfortable. The flight, from Sydney to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, experienced a technical issue that prevented individual movie selection. According to a statement from Qantas, the crew had a limited list of films and, based on passenger requests, selected a particular movie to play for the entire flight.

Though Qantas did not specify the film, social media users on the flight identified it as “Daddio,” a 2023 drama starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn. The film, rated R by the US Motion Pictures Association for “language throughout, sexual material, and brief graphic nudity,” was deemed inappropriate for a broad audience. Passengers reportedly endured nearly an hour of the film, which featured nudity and explicit text messaging scenes, before it was switched to a more family-friendly movie.

A Reddit user on the flight described the experience as “super uncomfortable” for passengers, especially those traveling with children, and noted they couldn’t turn off or pause their screens. Qantas confirmed that the crew attempted to fix the issue but ultimately replaced the movie with a children’s film.

A Qantas spokesperson apologized for the mishap, stating, “The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight, and we sincerely apologize to customers for this experience.” The airline is reviewing the process that led to the film’s selection, and the cabin crew apologized to those who complained about the content.
